Family-Friendly Ladybug Hike

Ladybug Hike in Oakland's Redwood Regional Park
3.5 MILES OUT AND BACK FROM CANYON MEADOWS
People often ask me about the best ladybug hike for little people. I recommend this one. It's a wide, level, shady trail that follows Redwood Creek. It's got play structures, picnic areas, park benches, ample facilities and water, and, of course, legions of ladybugs.
  • 1.
Start at Canyon Meadows Staging Area.

Enter Redwood Regional through the main park entrance on Redwood Road in Oakland. Drive in past several overflow parking lots until you can drive no further. Park here, or go back and park there.

  • 2.
    Follow the Stream Trail.

Start at the paved entrance to the Stream Trail. Bathrooms and benches abound for the first 3/4 of a mile. As you continue past the signed "Trail's End," really take in the trees. When you cross the bridge, you can now answer "Are we there yet?" with "almost!"

  • 3.
Arrive at the Prince Trail (aka Ladybug HQ).

After you pass the bridge and picnic tables, start looking for ladybugs. You'll see them on downed trees, ferns, and the forest floor adjacent to the trail, especially on the stream side. When you reach the intersection with the Prince Trail, you'll see ladybugs everywhere you look. Absorb some joy, and then retrace your steps.
